Have you ever been to Spokane, Washington? I probably wouldn’t have put this on my list of must-see places, but our friends recently relocated up to the area and we wanted to take a peek into their new lives up in Eastern Washington!
We decided to visit the Downtown Spokane area on Sunday, July 5th back in 2015 and guess what? Half the businesses were still closed for the holiday weekend! Kind of a bummer. I guess the people of Spokane take their 4th of July holidays seriously. But that’s okay, we wandered around a bit and admired the quiet city.
One place that we wanted to try was the Steam Plant Brewery but alas, it was closed for the weekend. It looks like a pretty cool building though. It was once a functioning steam plant, but has since been renovated and converted into a brewery, restaurant and shopping area. I am a fan of the industrial architecture and you can see from the photos on their website that they kept the essence of the original steam plant throughout.
Riverfront Park
This is a really cool park right in the middle of downtown Spokane. The Spokane River runs through town and there are some cool bridges that you can walk across and get some nice views of the water, as well as some of the cool historical buildings right on the water.
Black Label Brewing
After our walk through the park, we wanted to try a brewery from Downtown Spokane so we found one that was open called Black Label Brewing. The beer was so so. I had the IPA – my favorite kind of beer!
Nearby was Caffe Affogato, a little cafe serving up coffee and ice cream! I got the vegan chocolate and vanilla ice cream to cool me off in the summer heat. These were coconut milk based ice creams and they were pretty tasty. I try to get something vegan if it’s on the menu, and this was the first vegan thing I saw on our trip.
No-Li Brewhouse
Finally, on our way out of Downtown Spokane, we stopped of at No-Li Brewhouse to sample their beers. Luckily, they were open!
They have a cool little place right down on the river. If I lived here, I would go there all the time just for the atmosphere.
Their beers were not too bad. I would recommend trying the barley wine! We tried:
- Born & Raised IPA
- Jet Star Imperial IPA
- Wrecking Ball Imperial Stout
- Big Bang Barley Wine
- Crony Brown Ale
- Brass Monkey (seasonal)
I ordered the nachos there but…just being honest…they weren’t that great – they could have been a little more generous on the toppings. I mean, I think I had like 12 black beans on my entire plate of nachos. Micah had the Reuben. He kind of gravitates toward those whenever they are on the menu.
And that’s that for Spokane! Our next destination was a quick overnight visit to Bellingham, WA with a stop on the way to see Snoqualmie Falls!
