Yes, my friends, you read that right! I’m dedicating this entire post to a sausage garden – the Copenhagen Sausage Garden in Solvang, California. It’s a little a gem in a super touristy town where you can sit down, have a freaking awesome sausage (and a beer), and just enjoy the atmosphere.
Back when I was a pescatarian, one of the things I missed most was a good old sausage! So, I was constantly trying out new faux meat products to find the perfect replacement (this is not an easy task). We actually went to the Copenhagen Sausage Garden in Solvang for my husband, because he just really wanted a sausage (I know the feeling). I was fully prepared to sit down and just snack on a pretzel while he mowed down a sausage; however, when we got there and I looked up at their menu board, I saw these glorious words: veggie sausage.
For the Meat Eaters
Meat eaters will be in sausage heaven, with a great list of sausages to try. Micah had the bratwurst and he was definitely in one of his happy places while eating it. You can also get your sausage bacon-wrapped, and while Micah didn’t get his like that, they did give him a little sample of it…and he said it was amazing.
Like many other places in Solvang, they also have a couple of charcuterie board options.
For the Veg-Heads
Vegetarians, you can rejoice in the fact that there are veggie options at a sausage garden (especially in a town that does not cater to vegetarians). I am almost sure that the veggie sausage options are from Field Roast, but they couldn’t confirm the brand with me. They offer Italian, Apple Sage, Frankfurter, and Chipotle, which are the four main sausage flavors I’ve seen from Field Roast. I got the Italian and it was delicious! You can also get one of their salad options, but why would you do that if you could eat a sausage?
They get their tasty bread from the local Solvang Bakery. Oh and the pretzel was fantastic – nice and fresh (not like some of those yucky frozen things you get sometimes), served with a tasty side of beer cheese.
The Sauce Bar (the best part!)
The huge star of the show here is really the sauce bar. Sausages are nice, of course, but I really think it’s the toppings that really make them shine. On top of the sauerkraut, jalapenos, pepperoncini, onion, and relish, they have like 15 different house-made sauces to try (mostly mustard).
Our favorites were the habanero mustard and horseradish mustard, because of course, we like all things spicy and the flavors are just really great. We wanted to take some home in bottles they were so good! I really recommend testing several of them in their sample cups to find the right one(s) that you like.
We were there in the morning right when they opened and about to get on the road to drive home, so we didn’t have any beer. However, this would definitely be an amazing place to hang out if you wanted to accompany your sausage meal with a frosty European beer! For you non-alcoholics, they have a very tasty strawberry lemonade.
Nightlife
Copenhagen Sausage Garden also has live music! You can check out their Facebook page for updates.
See You Soon, Sausages!
I totally wish we had checked this place out earlier in the trip because we would have certainly eaten here on more than one occasion. It’s casual, fast, and super tasty.
