Visiting Texas wasn’t really about having a vacation but rather visiting my sister and her family in Houston. I had been to Houston years earlier and decided that I wasn’t a huge fan. However, I do love my family, so off to Texas we went!
Traveling to Texas in September (2014) means high heat. Particularly in Houston, it means heat and humidity like nothing I’ve ever experienced! And I’m from Hawaii. Texas humidity is a whole different ball game. We practically melted.
We spent some time with my family playing darts, listening to the buzzing of cicadas (so quintessential Texas), and eating Texas-sized food. Seriously…the food in Texas really is big!
When we arrived in Houston, my sister took us to an English pub called Watson’s House of Ales. It was the perfect quirky spot to kick off our long weekend in Texas.
Some scenes from the rest of our time in Texas, including a smoked brisket, summer sunsets, and darts!
Galveston Beer Fest
One day on our trip to Houston trip, we escaped down to the coast to check out the Brewmasters Craft Beer Festival in Galveston. BEER! It was a bit of a rainy day, but we didn’t mind too much. It was kind of welcomed actually.
We purchased the rather expensive tickets to get a tiny little “mug” to do the beer tasting but I’m really glad we did. We got to try so many different beers that haven’t made their way out to the West Coast yet for us to try – beers from Texas and Kentucky were specifically memorable!
It was held at the Moody Gardens Convention Center, and I was afraid it would be hard to navigate around the crowds, but the place was quite big and not as crowded as I thought.
One of my favorites that I remember trying was the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale from Alltech Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company. They even had a pumpkin seasonal bourbon barrel ale that was so good!
Micah’s favorite was Devil’s Share by Real Ale Brewing out of Texas. I think I lost count on how many samples of that he got. It was a tripel, which is usually not my favorite, but it was so different than anything else we had tasted before.
After the show, we wandered on down to the beach to watch the GORGEOUS sunset and listen to live music. There were tons of fish jumping out of the water there too! Lovely way to end a fun day.
One thing I will note is that vegetarian-friendly options at the places we visited in Houston were kind of sparse. This is, after all, the land of meat! I am sure if you are staying closer to the actual downtown city area in Houston, there are plenty more options to choose from.
