It may sound cliche…but we actually did honeymoon in Las Vegas! The year: 2012. The budget: minimal. The temperature: scorching. The trip: one of my favorites.
This was the beginning of our travels together as husband and wife. In the first moment of setting out on our adventure, I knew that this man would make all my travel dreams come true.
We didn’t have a huge budget to spend on a honeymoon, but we knew we wanted to get away somewhere. A deal for The Westin at Lake Las Vegas popped up on Travelzoo and we snagged it! I hadn’t been to Vegas since I was a teenager, and Micah had never been, so we thought it might be fun for our first trip together. Plus, since the hotel was on a “lake,” we thought it might be a bit of a more romantic setting than staying right on the Vegas Strip.
We drove the nine hours to our destination the day after our wedding, which initially proved to be a little difficult given the wonderful party we had the night before. But have no fear, we got a bottle of aspirin and a couple of burrito babies from Chipotle and we were good to go.
Lake Las Vegas is a man-made resort area about 20 to 30 minutes from the Strip, located in Henderson, NV. I feel giddy about staying at Westin hotels because their beds are just fabulous. They are so comfortable and I wish every hotel took that much pride in their beds! Anyway, the view from our hotel was quite pretty. A lake in the middle of the desert. Who knew?
On our first full day, we explored the little “village” that is in the resort area. I had read online a head of time that this place was actually pretty dead. There weren’t a lot of people and a lot of shops had closed down. I guess it’s just a bad spot for business! The reviews were true…it was deserted, and in August no less.
We found an Irish Pub called the Auld Dubliner, which was just perfect for us. With a delicious sampler flight of beer, we washed down specialties like Irish nachos (made with potato chips) and corned beef.
That night we ate at the M Buffet, which had come recommended from a friend. It was about a 20-minute drive from our hotel. Vegas is famous for their buffets, right? The buffet was pretty good, but I wouldn’t say it was the best I’ve ever been to, especially coming from the perspective of a non-meat eater.
Our first day was rather uneventful I must say…however, one awesome thing about our resort was that there was a shuttle service right to the strip several times a day! So, the next day we headed to the strip…
To be continued!
