Living in the SF Bay Area, we certainly don’t lack options when it comes to road trips or short day trips. Mnay summers ago, we drove up to Tahoe for a long weekend to take advantage of special timeshare rates we had.
This trip was heavily food oriented…though I suppose all of our trips really are!
We hit up Johnny Garlic’s on the way there at their Sacramento location (which has since closed) since we needed some lunchtime sustenance! We had ahi wonton tacos, salads, pasta, etc. It’s was chain restaurant out there owned by Guy Fieri and while it’s not really like a foodie-centric place, it sufficed.
We stayed at The Ridge (where we will be staying at again), which is part of a little resort area with condos for timeshare owners (and non-timeshare owners, of course). The awesome part about staying in this resort area in Tahoe is the free shuttle service to and from town (the resort area is up on a hill a ways)! We definitely utilized this a few times.
We cruised through the casinos our first night and settled on dinner at Cabo Wabo, which was actually quite tasty. I had some tostadas with black beans, lettuce and shrimp and it was actually pretty yummy. Our group also had fish tacos, a burrito, and a meat combo plate.
Silly times and beer at Fire & Ice!
The next day, we had breakfast at Fox & Hound not to far from the condo. They have delicious breakfast burritos (and huge bugs, eeek!).
One thing about going up to Tahoe is that my dad lives there, so of course, we took some time that day to visit him. He has an incredibly cute, fat little chihuahua named Ginger, and she can’t help but make you smile and melt your heart. You can’t resist that face!
Observing an eccentric, tattooed old Japanese man…
We had a late lunch at Fresh Ketch. Had to try the chowder and fresh fish!
The awesome thing about staying at a condo is the kitchen. Chilaquiles anyone?
The next day we had lunch with my dad again at The Beacon Bar and Grill. They are known for their Rum Runner drinks…hard to have just one! We ate up seafood dishes like clam chowder, crab tostada, and fish tacos. We said goodbye to my dad, and then drove around the lake a bit to take in some of the beautiful views.
We also headed out to Genoa for a bit. They have Nevada’s oldest thirst parlor, as well as Raquel Welch’s bra! They actually have a whole vault full of bras. She said if she put up her bra, all the others hanging in the bar would have to be put away! A cool old little town to spend a bit wandering through…
For dinner that night, it was all about Sushi Pier. They have all you can eat sushi for $25!!! I’m always a little skeptical of those all-you-can-eat sushi places….how is the quality? How is the service? We sat at the sushi bar (a tip I learned from Yelp) and if you happen to get “The Colonel,” which we did, you won’t be disappointed. He made custom rolls for us all evening. Well worth it (give them a big tip though).
The next morning it was time to roll home…we literally felt like we could roll home after all the food we ate. So what did we do next? We grabbed lunch before we headed out to Tahoe. Should it probably have been a light lunch? Yes. Was it? Absolutely not. We ate at MacDuff’s Public House. Artichoke dip, onion rings, jalapeno mac n cheese, Reuben’s!
Driving back through the Sac area, we stopped at Jimboy’s Tacos – a chain restaurant serving tacos and burritos. We only stopped there because Micah had never been. We really didn’t need more food. Honestly.
I’m kind of excited for our next trip up there soon to try out some new places!
