If you are looking for a hidden gem off the beaten path in the neighborhood of Montparnasse, look no further! Le Bistrot des Campagnes is your answer. We visited this place for two reasons: 1) It was in very close proximity to our hotel, Hotel Le Royal, and 2) it had stellar reviews!
We wandered over to the restaurant to check out the menu (as it seems many Parisian restaurants have their menus available to see outside) and the manager came out to greet us politely with a big smile and explained they could translate the menu in English for us. Sold! Contrary to popular belief, the French are very friendly and accommodating (at least in our experience).
Our waitress took the time to explain literally every item on the menu in English for us, and though I can’t remember the exact names of all the dishes, I’ll do my best to describe what was quite possibly the best meal of our trip! Please excuse the quality of some of these photos – it was quite dark in there that evening!
We each selected our own appetizer. For me, I had this amazing little terrine of veggies cooked in what tasted like the most amazing butter sauce, topped with a soft, semi-melted round of cheese. Wow. So much flavor!
Micah had the salmon tartare but I think he wished he would have gotten the vegetarian appetizer that I had!
For the main course, hubby had the confit de canard (duck confit) with gratin potatoes. I think in that moment, he died and went to foodie heaven. I’m not kidding…he savored every bite and emitted plenty of happy sounds from his side of the table. He will be dreaming of this dish for many years to come.
For me, it was the fish, which was a whole bass served with a beurre blanc sauce, and potato and carrot mash with sauteed veggies. Hello deliciousness! Wow. The flavors. The fish was so delicate and soft and that beurre blanc (my goodness do the French like their butter) was amazing slathered all over that fish. I highly recommend this – and breaking down the fish was not a difficult feat. You can do it.
By the end of our meal, we were stuffed! But who can resist ordering dessert when in Paris. We went with the crème brulee, as we needed something a bit on the lighter side for dessert, but the profiteroles seem to be pretty popular and also look amazing!
And just look at this cute little miniature cafe setting that the bill comes in! If we ever make it back to Paris, Le Bistrot des Campagnes is at the top of our list of places to return to. If you are currently in Paris or are traveling there soon – go. Go now.

Top 5 dinner of my life. I’m emitting those sounds right now just thinking about it.
