This post is for all my plant-loving followers! Wandering around a botanical garden is such a peaceful activity. You get lost in the sights of all nature has to offer, and can wander around aimlessly for hours – which is exactly what we did.
We ended up at the Montreal Botanical Garden one afternoon when our wine tour was cancelled (the horror, right?!). I already had the garden on my list of things to see but having the tour cancelled just meant we would enjoy a leisurely day in Montreal, rather than rushing around.
Funny enough, I wanted to visit the Gardens mostly because of a living sculpture exhibit I found via Google image search. Well…let me tell you – that was fake news! That exhibit is long gone…from the garden at least, but not from Google (or Pinterest). So don’t let Google fool you! Just for fun, go ahead and type in “Montreal Botanical Garden” in the Google image search and you’ll see photos of these amazing living sculptures of people coming up out of the earth, adorned in flowers. If you got the chance to see that exhibit in person, I 100% envy you!
Moving on…
Just because that living sculpture exhibit isn’t at the Montreal Botanical Garden any longer, doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of beauty to be found. In fact, there is so much to see there, you can hardly fit it all in with one visit!
Important Details
When to visit: Spring and Fall are great time to visit. Spring = flowers in full bloom (especially at the arboretum), and fall because, well, fall colors are just amazing! We visited in the spring and it was perfect!

Enjoy the photo tour!
The Greenhouse Collections
We started our time at the gardens with the Greenhouse Collections, which included a ton of tropical plants and a few of the desert variety.
The orchids were probably my favorite variety of plant to see here. Some of these were incredibly unique and I had never seen them before! I won’t dare to even try and recall what some of these were named, but a lot of them were so alien-like and even reminded us of insects and other creatures.
At the end of the Greenhouse Collection, we briefly wandered past some desert plans, i.e. lots of cactus plants!
I can imagine people spend a lot of time in the Greenhouse Collection in the colder months since you’re totally protected from the weather elements in here. Definitely recommend starting off in the Greenhouse!
Alpine Garden
The Alpine Garden was a brief stop we made shortly after we entered the main portion of the gardens, and is pretty much what is sounds like – lots of alpine plants and trees! We swung by a peaceful little waterfall, and then continued on our journey through the gardens.
Chinese Garden
The Chinese Garden, in my opinion, is definitely one of the most picturesque of all the gardens! Lots of colors to contrast each other, calming waterfalls, and a nice big lake.
Arboretum
The arboretum was another favorite of mine. Rows and rows of blossoming trees filled the area, and there were little chairs scattered throughout under the trees. It would be a beautiful spot for a picnic or just to sit and read a book for a couple of hours. It would also be an amazing spot for a photo shoot! It had such great light, and everything was so pretty with all the pink and white flowers in bloom.
The Things In Between
Lastly, while walking from garden to garden, we spotted some different things along the way, like these baby ducklings swimming around in one of the lakes!
And of course this crazy rainbow colored banana tree (I’m assuming) that I posed with at the outset of this blog post.
And that’s pretty much all we had time for on our first visit to the Montreal Botanical Garden. If you’re looking for a calming activity on your visit to Montreal, this is definitely it!
The Gardens are also located near the Planetarium so if you have some extra time, you can get a two-ticket combo package (see more info here) and see them both!
