At the tail end of our trip to Texas, we drove up to Austin from Houston to meet Micah’s friend, Randy. I wish we would have had more time to explore this city, especially the restaurants, but our time was limited.
It was very hot in Austin that that day – near 110 degrees – but at least it was dry compared to Houston’s humidity!
Exploring Downtown Austin
One thing was for sure, Austin is definitely a place for music! There are bars everywhere advertising open mic nights, and giant statues of guitars placed around downtown.
One thing I wish we would have stuck around for was to watch the swarm of bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk, but it was still too early in the day and so hot, we had to get out of the heat. It does look pretty amazing though, so I would definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Austin at sunset! We settled for a pretty view of the river from the bridge instead.
Our First Top Golf Experience
The next day before our flight out of Austin, we went to Top Golf. A pretty neat place! Of course, it was another hot day, but it was still fun!
The idea is that you hit your golf balls into the different holes in the ground and get scored based on that. I totally stunk at it but I really enjoyed it! I’m not a golfer by any means, and you don’t have to be one to have a fun time at Top Golf. This is actually a pretty family-friendly place – we saw lots of families with kids even!
You get your own private couch area, and you can order food and drinks to be brought to you. It’s a beautiful facility!
Where We Ate in Austin
Chupacabra Cantina
400 E 6th Street, Austin, TX 78701
On our drive up from Houston, we had a hankering for some good Tex Mex. We decided on having lunch at Chupacabra Cantina. Cool place, interesting food selection, and delicious drinks.
Micah had some enchiladas and I had a veggie burrito covered in queso.
My favorite quote of the whole trip: “Jalapenos free. This is Texas, Dammit!”
Brooklyn Heights Pizzeria
14900 Avery Ranch Blvd, Suite C700, Austin, TX 78717
We ended up going back to our friend’s house that evening (after sweating profusely in the insanely hot weather, trying to sightsee in the city) for some gigantic “medium-sized” pizzas (and wine for me!), staying true to my perception that everything is bigger in Texas than it is everywhere else. I had the shrimp and garlic pizza with pesto. Mangia!
Taco Deli
12001 Burnet Road, Austin, TX 78758
The original idea was to visit Tacodeli for their breakfast tacos. However, they serve their breakfast tacos until 11:00 a.m., and you can’t order anything off the regular menu (unless you’re a vegetarian) until after that time. But we were there so long, Micah was able to order lunch since he didn’t want breakfast tacos.
I got the Freakin’ Vegan tacos (refried black beans, avo, and pico de gallo) and the Space Cowboy tacos, which have roasted Portobello mushrooms with corn, caramelized onions, roasted peppers, guacamole, and queso fresco, which were SO good.
A word to the wise, this location gets packed as it’s pretty popular, so be prepared to have a hard time finding a parking spot, and to wait in line and for your food for a while. They do have a yummy selection of salsas to choose from at their salsa bar. Try the orange habanero sauce!
And just like that, our adventure in Texas came to an end. We sipped on uber expensive drinks at the Austin airport before saying goodbye to the Texas heat!
