On one of our trips to Portland, Oregon we took a little day trip out to the beautiful Oregon coast. The main thing that motivated us to go on this day trip was actually to visit Astoria and see The Goonies House! 80’s kids unite!
From where we were staying (near Forest Park), it was about 1 hour and 45 minutes out to Astoria. Astoria is such a cute, little coastal Oregon town! I could definitely see myself retiring there someday, although it seems a little far from the big city civilization that we so love. It’s very artsy and I love all the old houses and architecture. Everything has so much charm and character, it really feels like a good place to call “home.”
Stop 1: Goonies House
Once in Astoria, the first place we stopped at, of course, was The Goonies House. Since this is someone’s residence, you have to park at the end of the drive and walk up to see the house. It really isn’t anything too exciting, but it is cool to say we’ve been to The Goonies House!
You can’t go into the house or even walk up on the deck for privacy of the residents, so you really are just there to get your picture taken and carry bragging rights for the rest of your life. They do have some really beautiful views of the bay where the Columbia River ends though. I’d love to have a view like that!
Stop 2: Kombucha Break
Then, we were off to town to visit a local brewery, which wasn’t quite open yet, so we got some kombucha and sat for a bit in the café next door.
Stop 3: Fort George
At beer thirty, we made it over to Fort George Brewery. Since it was our first time, we decided to go with the beer flight. There were definitely some good ones in there like the Sunrise Oatmeal Pale and the 3 Way IPA!
We also snacked on smoked salmon, fruit & veggies, as well as a sausage and cheese plate and lots of flatbread. It was a very satisfying beer and snack experience.
Stop 4: Lunch at Bridgewater Bistro
We had been craving clam chowder, as one would when they visit the seaside, so we stopped at the Bridgewater Bistro and had a bowl of red clam chowder and fish and chips! It was my first time having red chowder.
There were some pretty bridge views just outside though so we snapped a few pics before heading down the coast.
Stop 5: Scenic Viewpoints
We drove the beautiful coastline on a perfectly sunny day. It really is amazing to see the views! We didn’t make too many stops along the way as we wanted to make it back to the condo in Portland before dark, but we did find a few pretty places.
Stop 6: The Fish Peddler
On down to Tillamook we went, stopping for fresh oysters and more clam chowder at The Fish Peddler! What can I say – it was a seafood kind of day.
Stop 7: Tillamook Cheese
Finally, our last stop was at the Tillamook Cheese Factory. Inside, it was all about the cheese and ice cream!
All in all, the Oregon coast is a perfect little day trip from Portland if you want to get out of the city and enjoy some ocean views. I’m so glad we had such beautiful weather when we were there. Can’t wait to go back and explore more of that beautiful coastline!
Happy Traveling!
